Six Months Down

I cannot believe that I have been the nearly sole provider of sustenance for two humans for six months! I never had a “plan” as to how long I would breastfeed, in fact, my outlook while pregnant was, if it works, great. At the six-month mark, I am so happy that I have been able to do this for my little ones.

That’s not to say it hasn’t been hard. I was exhausted and delirious in the first few months since I was up with them so frequently. My son, who took a bottle for the first four months has now decided he doesn’t like it anymore. My daughter doesn’t sleep through the night. But I know these things will get better.

Thankfully, I have an incredible support system. In addition to my husband, family, friends, and a couple of mothers’ groups, I have a few lactation consultants on stand by and my midwife’s office on speed dial. And I have leaned on them a lot. I have asked everything from: how much should I feed the babies, to why won’t this blocked duct unblock?

I am waking a couple of times a night with the babies. We’re working on getting more calories into my son, so I am putting sleep on hold and feeding them often. We’re seeing a gastrointestinal doctor as well as a nutritionist to help us figure out things. And I am trying not to stress out, so as not to affect my milk supply.

Perhaps we’ll keep this up for another six months!
