Back to Life, Back to Reality

I’m really grateful to have had three months home with my baby… we spent this time bonding and getting into the swing of our new life together. I treasured the moments spent cuddling with him on the couch and reading books to him in the nursery. We took long walks together, long naps together, and I learned all about him. The time really flew by and before I knew it, maternity leave was over and it was time to get back to reality.

The first few days at work were the most difficult. My mom is Aiden’s full-time caregiver so she would send me pictures of him from her camera-phone and I couldn’t stop the tears from flowing. I missed him so much. I never realized how much I could miss someone until I had to be away from Aiden. A few hours without him near feels like days! Now that I am back at work full time, I only want to spend my weekends and evenings with him.

My priorities are so different now – any list I had before has been officially topped and taken over by Aiden. He is my anchor now, my reason, he’s my everything. A fun party or a Broadway show just can’t ever compare to a night at home with Aiden, making him laugh and watching him sleep. I’m forever changed because of this tiny person and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So far, pumping at work has been going really well. I had a single, electric pump that I was using but realized within two weeks that I needed to rent a hospital grade pump to keep my supply going and pump more efficiently. I have a nifty BPA-free bottle with a cold pack that wraps around it that I tote to and from Manhattan every day. The milk goes in the freezer bags and Aiden has what he needs for the next day. At this point, I am willing to do whatever it takes to make this work. Aiden has been exclusively breastfeeding for two months now and I want to keep it that way.

When I get home in the evening, we immediately nurse and then I spend precious time with my baby before its bed time.  The two main changes Aiden has made since I’ve returned to work are 1) he has been waking up for more nighttime feedings. I believe this is called “reverse-cycling”. I really don’t mind the nighttime feedings since we co-sleep, I still get plenty of rest and Aiden gets what he needs. 2.) He has started sucking his thumb. I guess this is for comfort reasons and now he will suck his thumb for naps and bed time.

Overall, we are adjusting to our new routine and I am learning that regardless, I will still miss my baby when I am away… it just makes our time together that much more special!
