My Unsung Hero

My husband has been amazingly supportive and wonderful during my transition back to work. I've always known he's a keeper but I'm still surprised by how he's always here for me when I need him. Ed has been getting up at 5:00 am to get himself ready early so he can help get Joshua dressed and packed to go while I get dressed. He fixes me breakfast and packs my lunch while I nurse Joshua, then buckles Joshua into his car seat and drives off. Because of Ed, we're all able to get out of the door by 6:45 am.

On Joshua's first day at daycare, Ed stayed until he was sure Joshua was okay, then went back to visit him at lunch time and assured me that Joshua was happily playing with the other babies. Joshua spends two days each week with Ed's mother, during which time Ed sees him at coffee break and lunch and loves that he gets to spend so much time with his son.

I pick Joshua up when I get out of work and spend some quality time with him. When Ed gets home, he either plays with Josh so I can wash bottles and my pump parts and cook supper, or Ed will take over and do those tasks so I can play with Josh. He's done all of the dishes and cleaning since I went back to work and at night we get as much as possible packed for the next day.

After supper, Josh and I take a bath while Ed cleans up. Ed takes him out of the tub, dresses him in jammies and reads a book while I wash my hair. Then I nurse Joshua to sleep in the big bed while Ed goes downstairs for a little down time in front of the TV. Ed happily brings me my laptop so I can do some work while I lie in bed next to our sleeping baby. He'll also bring a glass of water and often a treat like a brownie or cookie. He knows me well enough to know that spending time online and some dessert are just what I need to relax at the end of the day.

He's my biggest supporter, my shoulder to cry on, a fantastic dad for Joshua, and my best friend. When all three of us snuggle in the big bed at night, it is my favorite time of day. I'm so in love with my two boys, and I'm so thankful that Ed is unquestioningly supportive of my decision to breastfeed. Because Ed knows the importance of breastfeeding, he's more than willing to pick up the slack so I can spend time nursing Joshua, washing the pump, or measuring expressed milk and labeling bottles. Ed also keeps me hydrated and fed so I can continue to produce milk for Joshua. Sometimes in the craziness that is the life of a working mom I take my husband for granted and don't say "Thank you" for all of the little things he does to make my life easier.

(I need to re-read this post the next time he tracks mud through the house.)
